Web 3.0

When we talk about web the first question that comes in our mind is, what is web? Web, as described by OED (Oxford English Dictionary) means “a complex system of interconnected elements.”

But the internet web is as big as the globe. Web in the terms of internet means a source through which you can surf about various topics, issues and extract information about them.

Web as a journey, started with Web 1.0, where it worked on the basis of search and read, leading to less user interaction and content distribution.

Later, Web 2.0 emerged with advanced features.

Web 2.0

According to Tim O’Reilly

Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as a platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform.”

Web 2.0 had various features like, social media (Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, Skype, Youtube etc.) where the user became capable of interacting with other users around the web. Also multiple tools came into being.

It is based on the concept of :

  1. Blogging
  2. Wikis
  3. Social Networks
  4. Bookmarking
  5. Instant Messaging

And much more…

In blogging, the individual got an access of expressing themselves by writing their ideas and views over a particular topic, and in this way reader started reviewing their (a blogger’s) work. Blogging also took the path of advertising and information.

Wiki emerged as a platform for managing the knowledge. It contains information about every topic that can help a user in one way or the other. Also the user could collectively share and edit a body of knowledge.

Social Networks also play a big role in the emergence of Web 2.0. User got acquainted with various other issues through social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter etc. It also came up as a platform for business and advertising.

In Bookmarking, Users became able of saving and sharing links.

Therefore, with the advent of Web 2.0, we find ourselves in an age of participation – a time when all users are empowered to contribute, regardless of background or position.

Now, the next technologies are used to make a more semantic web and this will happen if Web 3.0 comes in role.

It will be a sematic web, with Intelligent System Planning. It will be like a video web available to all the users.

The web defines Semantic Web in the following way:

“The semantic web is a vision of information that is understandable by computers, so computers can perform more of the tedious work involved in finding, combining, and acting upon information on the web.”

Expert’s Statement for Web 3.0:

  1. Tim Berners-Lee
    • “…, you’ll Have access to an unbelievable data resource”.
  2. Nova Spivak
    • “…It’s a set of standards that turns the Web into one big database”.

Let us understand the concept of Web 3.0 with an example:

The Question: ”I’m looking for a warm place to vacation and I have a budget of $3000 and I have an 11-year-old child.”

Today’s System, such query can lead to hours of sifting (through lists of flights, hotel, car rentals) and the options are often at odds with one another.

Web 3.0 will call up a complete vacation package that was planned as meticulously as if it had been assembled by a human travel agent.

Web 3.0 will be like a three-dimensional internet available for the user, providing him with better surfing experiences.

But after all this the last question that might come to everybody’s mind is What does it need?

And the answer is, advanced technology; software, hardware and protocols, larger bandwidth and network capacity with a good level of Privacy, Security and Controllability should be granted over Web 3.0 to encourage people to use it.
